What we are about?
Music is not worship. Worship is a whole life response to our awesome God. Every minute we are alive from now to eternity we are mindful of who he is and our desire to serve him in every decision we make. The fruit of our entire life should be an aroma pleasing to our heavenly Father. That's worship.
Music was however created by God to inspire and help us to praise him in one way. Everywhere we look we see singing and rhythms stirring people to worship. Football fans stand, arms in the air, singing about their team. Sweaty clubbers dance themselves into a frenzy of adulation without knowing what they praise. The classical concert audience, moved by sheer beauty, wonder at the talent of Mozart or Beethoven. The beauty of melody, the drive of rhythm and the buzz of corporate harmony are there to release worship. What many don't know is that music's essence is praise of its Creator: God.
So someone who knows God can praise him at a football match, club night or concert. It is also natural that when several people who know him get together they want to express their worship to him musically. That's why we sing his praises together at CLC meetings, and use music during prayer and at other times.
Music in CLC
Guitars are not music. Because no instrument or style of music is inherently evil, let's be creative and diverse in our musical expressions when we get together. CLC has praised through rock bands, DJs and classical instruments as well as more conventional styles. We welcome diversity, want to be musically relevant to our peers, not stuck in the rut of traditional church preference.
Musicians are not worship leaders. There is no role or gift in the New Testament church picture of 'worship leader'. Each of us has to decide to express personally our own praise to God, and our corporate meetings are a great opportunity to do this. Musicians are there to inspire and help us, but praise has got to come from the overflow of our own passionate love for God.
Singing is not praise. There are other ways to praise God on a Sunday morning than just singing, not least getting out and meeting people's needs. Other times in CLC we tell stories of the great things God has done for us, or express our praise using another art form.
