Become a follower of Jesus

Becoming a Christian is the most exciting and important decision a person can ever make. Have you read ‘What is a Christian?’ on this website? It explains clearly what it is all about. Once you have read it, and perhaps have talked to a Christian friend about it, there’s nothing to stop you becoming a follower of Jesus. If you understand what it means, and you feel ready to respond to God in this way, then the following prayer is designed to help you talk to God about it all.

You may want to read it aloud. Even better would be praying it through with a friend who can encourage you. The important thing is that you take your time, and mean it from the heart.

Prayer

Father God, I thank you that you made me and love me so much. Your love for me is so strong that even though I have messed up this life you gave me, you provide me with another chance. I thank you for Jesus, your son, who you punished instead of me for the things that I have done wrong. I know I deserved punishment, but Jesus paid the price by dying on the cross. I am sorry for my sin … [here you can name things you’ve done wrong].

I accept that because of Jesus, you have now forgiven me completely. He is alive, and you have filled me with his Spirit, making my life new. I want to hand over the reigns of my life to you God. Thank you that you have saved me from eternal punishment giving me a place in heaven. I want to say that I love you too.

Help me to grow as a follower of Jesus, as a Christian. Amen.
