Apparently if you go to the Firefox plugins page (http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/) and download Java it works!

Richard: The plugin is question is the Sun Java virtual machine. the Mozilla people are not legally permitted to distribute it automatically with their auto-download system, becasue Sun Microsystems will not let them, so it is hardly their fault.

I beat the game. Only with mark and liz's motivational help, but nevertheless, my life is my own again. thanks for being the inspiration i needed to beat it geoff.
